This glossy black lacquer box is decorated with a miniature painting of a scene from The Scarlet Flower, the Russian version of Beauty and the Beast. The artwork shows the beast, a lumpy green glob with fiery breath hiding in a cave before his palace. The lovely girl is opposite, holding onto her magical scarlet flower, enclosed in a gleaming gold circle. There are stylized vines and flowers surrounding the central figures and a floral border of tooled gold.
The box, which measures 3 ½” long x 2 3/8” wide x 1 ¼” high, is glossy black outside, glossy red inside. It has a removable lid.
Signed by the artist in lower right corner, Tihomir and an initial which we can’t read. (Tihomir is a Russian first name.) Name of story is at left and, probably, the city of manufacture at center, but we haven’t been able to read those Cyrillic characters.
Condition is excellent with just a few slight smudges to underside of box.
