The luminous painting on this Russian lacquer box shows the handsome young Tsarevich, Ivan, clutching the Firebird by the tail as she struggles to escape. Her golden wings, thrust upward to the top of the picture, contrast with Ivan’s booted feet planted firmly against the ground toward the lower edge. The gleaming tail of the Firebird makes up the center of this dynamic scene from the Russian folktale, Tsarevich Ivan and the Gray Wolf.
The dominant colors are red, gold and green against a glossy black ground. Dull-colored trees are behind the major figures. The earth where Ivan stands is also luminous with the underlying foil used by the classic Russian box-makers. All outer surfaces are covered in high-gloss black; inside of box is high-gloss red. There are four little feet at corners of underside. Lid is removable.
Box measures 6” long x 2 7/8” wide x 1 ½” high.
Box is signed in Cyrillic Russian for the Fedoskino school on lower left side of the painting and by the artist on lower right, next to the Tsarevich’s foot.
Condition is excellent with no damage of any kind and no repairs.
