These charming pottery kingfishers are painted in subtle shades of blue, but their long bills and their eyes are sharply delineated in black. They look very purposeful, sitting on a mossy rock and a stump, probably watching the water. This is one of the more finely painted of this pair that we've seen.

The figurine measures 5” tall x about 5 ½” wide.

When Stangl started making figurines, his only identifying marks were stickers and tags. A great believer in making his pottery known, he began impressing his name, USA and the shape name into the underside of each piece. Our kingfishers are marked in this way with shape number 3406D, Stangl and USA molded into the underside. The letter D stands for double, meaning that there are two birds to the piece. The unidentified artist’s initials R.F. also appear under the glaze. This piece was made between 1940 and 1942 (Runge p.111).

The condition is excellent; the tips of the bills are missing a tiny bit of paint, but are intact - no damage. There are no chips, cracks, scratches or crazing. A handsome addition to your collection, a must have for kingfisher collectors!
