Here is the adorable Stangl Pottery rendition of a mother goldfinch with her three young ones sitting on a green leafy branch, all with wide open mouths. The finches all are realistically colored in bright yellow with black markings. The branch is mostly green with mottled brown and large green leaves.
Measures about 12 ½” long at longest x 4 ½” tall x 4 ½” deep.
Large leaves, twigs and ends of branch provide “feet” for the figurine, and these contain the maker’s marks. On one is Stangl stamped in capitals; on another the pattern number, 3635 is impressed; another illegible number is also present; and the artist’s initials are inked inside the end of the branch, VR for Viola Reames at the main pottery in Trenton. All of the larger or more complex figurines were made at the Trenton site. (Runge, pp. 98-99 and 124)
Except for some crazing to the heavy glaze, this piece is in excellent condition, free of chips, scratches, cracks or repairs. We picture it giving cheer for decades to come. – And imagine it as a surprise on Easter morning!
