The traditional lines of this rotund pitcher are in contrast with the outlandish shapes of many of Myott’s pottery pieces of the 1930s, but the bold colors and the studied carelessness of the painting style make it part of the pottery’s Art Deco line. The colors are black, green, red and yellow on an ivory-colored field. The design features abstract renditions of blown red tulips with their leaves scattered over the round center of the jug.

The jug measures 8 ½” tall by about 6 ½” wide. Marked in gold on underside with a Crown / Myott, Son & Co. / Made in England / Hand Painted / 8694 (the pattern number). Below this, also in gold, is Regd. No. / 789315; this is overstamped with Made in England in russet. This registered number means that the form was registered in 1934.

This cheerful jug / pitcher is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, scratches or crazing. There is a small unpainted place on the base (photo 1), but no signs of flaking. This piece will display beautifully!

The Myott Pottery was built in 1901 on the site of the former Brownfield Pottery at Cobridge, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire (The Potteries online). The Art Deco style jugs and vases in bright, assertive colors and unusual geometric shapes for which the firm is famous, were made there during the 1930s.
