Here is one of the sassy Art Deco pitchers from Myott’s Staffordshire pottery, done in bright bold colors on a geometric shape. Hand painted with green panels and brown stripes on a cream-colored field, the central oval cartouche boasts tall garden flowers in blue (which they rarely used) and orange.
Measures 7 ½” tall x 4 ¾” wide at top and bottom x 2 5/8” wide at center x 2 ½” thick. Curved handle is about 5 ¼” long. Printed on underside with gold Myott mark, a crown over Myott, Son & Co. / Made in England. Below this, also in gold, is B.A.G Co. Ltd. / Hand Painted / 9768 (pattern number). This is followed by Regd. No. 789317 (applied in gold). – This Registered Number indicates that the form was registered in 1934. – B.A.G. stands for British American Glass, an export company which dealt in works made for shipment to America. The condition of the jug is excellent with no chips, cracks, scratches or crazing. There is almost no paint loss. Please use the enlargement feature to inspect the photos.
This is a happy little item for a collection or as a stand-alone, and rare because of the use of blue!
The Myott Pottery was built in 1901 on the site of the former Brownfield Pottery at Cobridge, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire (The Potteries online). The Art Deco style jugs and vases in bright, assertive colors and unusual geometric shapes for which the firm is famous, were made there during the 1930s.
