Here’s a delightful antique toy, a porcelain infant half doll with pretty, delicate features. Hair, face and white shirt all are hand painted. Her arms are reaching. Lower half is covered with muslin around stuffing, and she was probably under a doll blanket or wearing a long nightgown originally. The doll is in a paper mache peanut shell with a matching lid, which fits underneath when not in use.
The doll is impressed with Germany on lower portion of back. She measures 2” tall x 1 7/8” wide (4 ½” tall including cloth-covered lower portion). Both halves of the peanut shell measure 5 ½” long x about 1 ¾” wide at widest point.
The porcelain doll is in excellent condition with no cracks, chips, scratches or crazing and no paint loss. The paper mache box is also in excellent condition with just a bit of wear to the edges, and we think there were once two cloth hinges which are now gone (part of the fabric remains).
She has beautifully painted features, and is so charming; guaranteed to make you smile!
(Any resemblance to the “Ophelia” of John Everett Millais is accidental – but hilarious.)
