This is a lovely and unusual little portrait cup and saucer, demitasse size, which features transferware portraits of a beautiful blond woman in an eighteenth century gown and hairstyle. The cartouche portrait graces both the cup and saucer and is enhanced on both pieces with bands of cobalt and gold.
There are thick bands of intricate and multi-colored geometrical patterns on both pieces and, on the cup, a band of gold enamel fleur de lis on blue ground. The interior of the cup, its underside and the bottom side of the saucer all are pure white porcelain.
The dainty cup measures about 2” across the rim x 1 ½” tall; the saucer is about 2 7/8” in diameter x ½” high. The mark on both pieces is a stamped gold oval showing Made in over Czechoslovakia.
There is minor wear to the gold on the cup’s rim, and an unfortunate small kiln dimple on the portrait at the center of the saucer. The condition of both pieces otherwise is excellent with no chips, cracks, scratches or crazing; there is no paint loss, and the cup portrait is stunning.
