We’re offering here a wonderful, elaborately decorated little cup and saucer set with a curving bird handle, gold enamel embellishments - and roses! The sweet cup is trumpet-shaped with a flared foot. The elaborate little handle – which actually boasts a bird – curves gently up the side of the cup, rising above the rim and curving back on itself to form a bird’s head at its center. The inside rim of the cup and the outside rim of the saucer bear a sort of fish scale design in rather heavy gold while the other outside surfaces of both pieces are adorned with garlands of colorful small flowers and wispy festoons in gold. The wispy motif is repeated at the base of the cup between two narrow gold bands. The stunning little bird handle is generously touched with gold as well.
Cup measures 2” across the rim x 2 ½” tall x 1 ¾” at flared foot. Bird handle stands up 3/4” above rim of cup. Saucer is 4 3/8” in diameter x ¾” high.
Both pieces marked with green underglaze mark showing T & V inside a round-cornered rectangle with France beneath it. This mark was used c. 1892 – 1907 (Gaston, mark 5a, p. 293).
The condition of both pieces is excellent with no damage of any kind and no gold or paint loss, not even to the handle. The colors and the gold are bright and there are no chips, scratches, cracks or crazing to this unusually pretty little demitasse set. It’s waiting to become a gift!
