Here is a lovely demitasse set in Castleton’s Garden Caprice pattern, a bright colored chintz of roses and blue asters. The cup stands on a little pedestal trimmed in gold enamel. The cup is gold trimmed at its rim and loop handle; the saucer is ringed with gold at rim and cup well. Both pieces are pretty and cheery!
The dainty cup measures 2 5/8” across rim x 2 ¼” tall; the little pedestal is 3/8” high. The saucer is 4 ¾” in diameter.
Mark on undersides of both pieces: A harp above a ribbon with Made in USA (all in black). Cup also inked in gold with A6.
This is American Rosenthal, made for Rosenthal by Shenango from 1939 – 1951, (because of the war and its aftermath in Germany). In 1951 Shenango bought out Rosenthal’s American interests and continued to run Castleton until the 1970s when it was purchased by Anchor Hocking. The Garden Caprice pattern was discontinued in 1950.
Both pieces are in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, or crazing. Minor wear to gold and surface of saucer. This is a perfect little set for gift-giving or for a collection.
We have recently acquired a marvelous estate collection of cups and saucers - mostly demitasse, espresso, and chocolate cups - and will be listing them in small batches over the next few weeks. This is an eclectic collection, with one common element: they were all chosen as pieces of exceptional quality and taste. Included you will find sets for all budgets, from Herend to Haviland, Aynsley to Copeland Spode.
Cups and saucers - especially the diminutive demitasse - make a wonderful Christmas present for someone special. If you're interested in a particular maker or style you don't see, please email us, and we may have it on hand.
