This is a fetching little hand painted demitasse set of translucent porcelain made by Schumann of Bavaria. The cup is adorned with an open poppy blossom and abundant green leaves on one side and a bursting poppy pod on the other. The ground is matte in several pale colors. The interior of the cup is pure white trimmed with gold. The little loop handle is covered with gold enamel. The saucer bears a poppy bud and a pod with several green stems on a ground like that of the cup. Only the poppy on the front of the cup is glazed, giving an artful effect.
Cup measures 2 ½” across the rim x 1 5/8” tall x about 1 ¼” at foot; saucer is 4 ¼” in diameter x ¾” high.
Mark is black underglaze lion on a shield with downward arching Bavaria above and upward Schumann below. This darker mark, other than the matching blue one, was registered April, 1926 and both marks were used until 1929 (Porcelain Marks and More on line). The mark appears only on the cup. Underside of saucer bears signature, Noll. in gold and no other marks.
The condition is excellent with no chips, cracks, scratches or crazing. Bold and sweet at the same time!
We have recently acquired a marvelous estate collection of cups and saucers - mostly demitasse, espresso, and chocolate cups - and will be listing them in small batches over the next few weeks. This is an eclectic collection, with one common element: they were all chosen as pieces of exceptional quality and taste. Cups and saucers - especially the diminutive demitasse - make a wonderful Christmas present for someone special. If you're interested in a particular maker or style you don't see, please email us, and we may have it on hand.
