This is truly beautiful in its simplicity (and complexity), a black transfer bucolic landscape on a pure white cup and saucer trimmed at edges with bright gold. The cup is a demi tasse can form with straight sides and a loop handle. It is covered with the landscape on the outside wall. Inside the gold edged rim is a wide border with geometric and floral elements. This border also rings the saucer which bears the landscape transfer over most of its surface.
The scene depicts shepherds and their flocks on the grassy slopes on one side of a river with castles among hills on the other side.
The cup measures 2 ¼” in diameter x 2 ¼” tall. The saucer is 4 3/3” wide x ¾” tall.
Mark is Copeland’s back stamp in black inside an oval: Copeland / Spode’s / Italian / England, one over the other. This mark was used from 1891-1970. (Copeland took over Spode in 1833.)
Condition is excellent with just a bit of crazing to one side of cup; none to saucer. An elegant set!
We have recently acquired a marvelous estate collection of cups and saucers - mostly demitasse, espresso, and chocolate cups - and will be listing them in small batches over the next few weeks. This is an eclectic collection, with one common element: they were all chosen as pieces of exceptional quality and taste.
Cups and saucers - especially the diminutive demitasse - make a wonderful Christmas present for someone special. If you're interested in a particular maker or style you don't see, please email us, and we may have it on hand.
