Here is a beautiful demitasse (or demi tasse) and saucer hand painted with heavy white-on-white glaze over wide bands of peach glaze which extend more than half way down the sides of the cup and over most of the surface of the saucer. Both pieces are ringed with bright gold, the saucer at its rim and the cup at rim, foot and handle. The little cup is a can form with a loop handle. It measures 2 3/16” in diameter x 2 ¼” tall while the saucer is 4 5/8” wide x 7/8” high. The heavy white motif gives a floral effect but is made up of soft-drawn leaves and plumes. The white paint is applied in several layers and resembles pate-sur-pate in effect.
Established by Camille le Tallec in Paris in 1928 to produce porcelain art of the quality of Sevres, Atelier le Tallec produced magnificently decorated articles for heads of state and the glamorous until his death in 1989; the Atelier was taken over by Tiffany of New York in 1990 to continue the Tallec tradition.
Le Tallec painted on porcelain pieces from the finest potteries, but always covered up those marks with a flower-like mark in gold. Along with that the atelier used blue under glaze coded marks for the date above the initials of the painter.
The date code on this piece is HH for 1957. There are also some blue flourishes over JN, the initials of the porcelain painter. Also shows Made in France in script at top and number 4179B at bottom, both in red on both pieces.
There is an unfortunate flea bite (less than 1/16 of an inch) to the gold edging of the cup’s rim. This shows in photo # 4. The bottom gold edge also has a small 1/8" spot of missing enamel (photo 1). There is no other damage of any kind, no cracks, scratches or crazing. This is a very special piece of craftsmanship.
