This is a handsome demitasse (or demi tasse) set, cup and saucer, of fine Czechoslovakian white porcelain, embellished with ornate gold bands, each ½” wide. Impressed with complex geometric motifs, the gold bands adorn the rims of the cup and saucer. The small flat-topped handle of the cup is gold enameled. The heavy gold decoration includes ovals, swags, urn-shaped geometric forms along with smaller delicate patterns around the rim.
The cup measures 2 1/8” in diameter x 2” tall. The saucer is 4” wide x 5/*” high.
The green mark on the underside of the cup is circular with Schlagenwald forming the lower part of the circle and ornate lines the upper. Two fir trees are at the top over h&c in gothic letters within the circle. The saucer has an oval-shaped mark with Czechoslovakia forming the top and Schlagenwald the bottom. H and C appear in standard block letters under a crown within the oval. When the saucer is held to the light, the number 1705 appears embedded in the porcelain. On both pieces Hellrich ’32 is written in gold ink. (We take this to be the decorator and date of work.)
The H&C pottery was large and successful, with both partners made noblemen by the Emperor Franz Joseph I, and remained a successful family concern until 1945 when the last of the Haas family died and it was nationalized.
The condition is excellent with no damage of any kind, no cracks, chips, scratches or crazing. There are a couple of tiny dark spots on the gold, and a small area in the gilding near the saucer's center which is smooth and not impressed as it should be, but it is from the making - and not easy to see.
This is a dignified little set probably meant for formal use, but it would make a beautiful stocking stuffer, too.
We have recently acquired a marvelous estate collection of cups and saucers - mostly demitasse, espresso, and chocolate cups - and will be listing them in small batches over the next few weeks. This is an eclectic collection, with one common element: they were all chosen as pieces of exceptional quality and taste. Included you will find sets for all budgets, from Herend to Haviland, Aynsley to Copeland Spode.
Cups and saucers - especially the diminutive demitasse - make a wonderful Christmas present for someone special. If you're interested in a particular maker or style you don't see, please email us, and we may have it on hand.
