Dryden Pottery, founded in 1946 by James A. Dryden, has been producing art pottery through several generations of the Dryden family. Founded in Kansas, the pottery moved to Hot Springs, Arkansas in 1956 and is now among the largest and oldest thriving potteries in America. JK Dryden, trained by his talented and successful father, ran the pottery in his turn until 2005 when he retired to be replaced by two of his own creative and imaginative sons.

The vase we’re offering here is by JK Dryden and represents the pottery’s double glazed, durable finish as well as the special creativity of the potter. In the shape of a primitive jar, the vase presents a bulbous lower portion, a straight neck and a square, fluted mouth. The colors are navy blue, light brown and a bold pink which is muted by the darker colors. The gourd-shaped lower portion is smooth while the neck is incised in rings to resemble a primitive method of coiling clay. The inside of the pot is a dark navy blue.

The navy lower half of the gourd blends into a brown area; above this is the neck, which is pink at the top and incised with “coils”. The clay is pulled up to form a square at the mouth and then fluted at the four rounded corners. – Well, I’ve done my best here and can only refer you to the pictures which I hope convey the lightheartedness, the craft, and the sense of history of this complex, delightful piece!

Measures 6 ½” tall x 5 ¾” wide at widest x 4” across mouth x 3 ¾” at base. Signed by JK Dryden. Also incised Orig. and ’95 for the date. Vase is in excellent condition and bears its original foil sticker reading Dryden Arkansas Pottery.
