Unusual in shape and décor, this blush ivory vase by Royal Worcester is adorned with hand painted roses in red and yellow on one side, cosmos and forget-me-nots on the other. These are delicately outlined in 22k gold. The rim of the spout and the scrolled, foliate handle are lined and painted with burnished 22k gold combined with elements of yellow gold. An impressed gold line runs under the rim, along the flat back of the spout and under the handle end where it becomes geometric, contrasting with the scroll work. The pitcher has a modified cone shape whose flared bottom is ringed with crimped scallops and lined with gold of the darker yellow. The inside of the pitcher is glossy white porcelain to contrast with the matte outside.

But, for all the complexity of the design, this pitcher gives a mood of sweetness and simplicity. It measures 5 7/8” tall x 3 5/8” wide at widest. It tapers from 2 7/8” spout to handle end to 3 ¾” at widest lower part. The little recessed gold-trimmed pedestal is 3/16” high.

Underside of pitcher bears Worcester’s mark in puce with Royal Worcester England beneath, but no dots, making the year of manufacture 1891 (Godden’s #4354). Also stamped in puce are Registered Number 177367 (for 1891; The Potteries) and pattern number 1546. Initials of decorators are inked on.

Condition is excellent with some minimal gold loss to front of spout and a tiny dark speck rough to the touch at the very bottom of the outside just above the pedestal (shown).
