This lovely Wedgwood biscuit jar bears white cameos on indigo blue jasper dip showing large over-hanging trees; classical women bringing wine and herbs to the altar of Hymen, god of marriage; goddesses Hera, with a falcon, and Artemis with a stag shown at the altar of Eros, god of romantic love.
Top and bottom metal fittings and three spherical feet are silver plated; the top ring marked on one side with EPNS (electroplated nickel silver) and with an impressed butterfly on the other. The flat lid with its spindle finial and the 4” tall bail also are EPNS. Mark on underside is Wedgwood, incised, with Made in England and A, which makes the year 1924, in the fourth Wedgwood alphabet cycle (Etruria Antiques).
There is a shallow spider crack to the underside of the jar which does not go through to the inside, which is exceptionally clean and smooth. There is wear especially to the very top edges of the jasper dip. Electroplating worn off except for inside of lid and rim. Lid may not be original, but covers nicely. Wear commensurate with age.
