This is the Lewis Carroll character Alice, cast in a lovely porcelain figurine by Royal Doulton at Burslem, Staffordshire. Alice is seated on the ground reading. She wears a blue dress with a white collar and a white band in her long blond hair. Her little purple shoes just match the cover of her book. She is reading Through the Looking Glass, open to a page of “The Walrus and the Carpenter” which you can actually read yourself if you look over her shoulder! Her delicately hand painted features show varying expressions as the figurine is viewed from different angles. The piece is truly beautiful with a touch of playfulness. It measures 4 7/8” tall x 3 3/4” wide x 3 1/2” deep.
Mark on underside is in green, a lion on a crown with Made in England arched over Royal Doulton / four interlocking Ds over a semi circle / and England /Bone China curved downward. Under this is a list (all in green): Alice / H. N. 2158 (series number) / COPR 1959 (the copyright date) / then a list of registration dates ending with Registered 1959. This figure, #2158, was issued from 1960 - 1981. The condition is pristine, with no flaws or damage of any kind.
