Napoleonic Marshall - Tall, Hand Painted Porcelain Figurine
This handsome Napoleonic Marshal wears a blue tailcoat with braid trim and gold enamel epaulettes, white trousers, a red sash and a black bi-corn hat. He wears medals and carries a removable metal sword which fits into an eyelet on his side. With his full “mutton chops” and pretty face he is, of course, Joachim Murat (1767-1815), Napoleon’s brother-in-law and one of his outstanding marshals. (Uniforms of the Napoleonic Wars) He stands on a gold enamel pedestal which has a Napoleonic N impressed on the front and embossed eagles at the corners. The piece measures 11 ½” tall x 4” wide x 2 ¾” square at base which is 2 ¼” high.
The maker’s mark inside the pedestal could be for Ernst Bohne & Sons,1854-1920, a Capodimonte-style crowned N over the glaze in blue (Rontgen, p.150). And the piece is from an estate lot of figurines by Bohne. However, the mark seems to have been painted rather than stamped so we cannot say positively that it's Bohne & Sons - but we can say that it was made with the greatest care and artistry.
A small spy glass which should be in the officer’s left hand, behind his sword is broken off; fortunately this is hard to detect. Otherwise this piece is in great condition and ready to join your collection. We have priced it to compensate for the missing part.
