We’re offering this adorable 1 pint salt glaze hunting scene pitcher in classic brown tones with applied figures. There are five large “sprigs” or applied clay cutouts around the bulbous midsection of the jug: a tree, a windmill, and three rotund men drinking beer (one accompanied by a dog, and one by an owl). Beneath these is an applied sprig hunting scene comprised of a horse at full gallop ridden by a man blowing a hunting horn, five dogs or pairs of dogs on the run, and a handsome stag with a full rack of antlers, also traveling at full speed. The handle terminal is Doulton’s famous bouquet of leaves and a flower fastened with a hasp. Pitcher measures 5 5/8” tall x 5” wide at widest.
Underside of jug bears impressed oval Doulton over Lambeth and England. This mark was used from 1891-c1901 (Mernick Brown Jugs website). Also impressed is a model number, 2394.
The condition of this piece is excellent with no cracks, scratches, chips, stains or crazing. It is remarkably clean inside and out. And it’s a happy little item, just wanting a home in your collection!
