This is a delightful set of children’s dishes made by Shenango, a small plate, bowl and milk pitcher. All are adorned with story book or nursery rhyme characters in bright but subtle colors. The pitcher features Georgie Porgie characters as well as Simple Simon’s baby sister, who seems to have gotten lost. The sweet little bowl shows the Pieman, Simple Simon holding his baby sister by the hand, as well as a little girl we believe to be from Pease Porridge Hot. Jack and Jill adorn the outer sides of the bowl. The center of the plate shows a chubby little American patriot in a three-cornered paper hat, holding a flag in one hand and the string to operate a toy canon in the other; the border of the plate is covered with the nursery rhyme group. All pieces are lined with bright green.
The pitcher measures 3” from spout to handle end x 2 ½” tall x 2 5/8 across widest point. Plate is 5 3/8” in diameter x 3/4” high. Bowl measures 4” across rim by about 1” high.
Mark on undersides of bowl and plate is outline of a Native American potter in green with Shenango China / Newcastle, PA underneath, all under glaze. Mark was used from 1920s-early 1950s. Uncoded. Pitcher is marked with a capital O which is also on the other two pieces.
There is very light transfer wear on the pitcher and bowl. The plate has some transfer wear and a couple of small utensil marks. There are no chips, scratches, cracks or crazing. Altogether this little set is in excellent condition, ready to give years of pleasure to kids and grown-ups alike.
