On this Lancaster and Sandland character mug, Charles Dickens’s renowned tipplers, Sam Weller of The Pickwick Papers, and Sairy Gamp of Martin Chuzzlewit, are depicted outside a pub with colored glass windows and timbered walls. The mug’s handle is a curving lamp post topped with a lighted lantern, and these features, along with the brickwork at top and bottom, lend a cozy charm. Measures 4 ¾” tall x 3 3/8” wide at brim x 4 1/8” at base.
Bottom of mug is embossed with a man, locked hands and feet in the stocks, gazing ruefully at a pitcher of beer left on the post beside him. Mark underneath is Lancaster & Sandland Ltd Hand Painted in England. Modeled and Designed by T. H. Sandland. (Part of maker’s mark is hard to read.) Mug is in excellent condition, free of chips, scratches, cracks or crazing. A cheerful and whimsical mug for the Dickens collector or mug collector!
