This is an abstract construct by Pigeon Forge sculptor Douglas Ferguson, made of a bent thick sheet of flat clay mounted on a hollow tapered base. There are holes at the top which have been painted with stipples and drips of brown paint to resemble the faces of two owls. Flat piece appears to have been pressed on a piece of leather or other rough surface to produce a uniformly rough texture (with one thicker spot of clay on one side); base is a cream to tan glaze, perfectly smooth. All paint is the under glaze. Attractive and varied, giving a different appearance from each angle.
Signed on base Pigeon Forge Pottery and D. Ferguson (founder of Pigeon Forge Pottery which flourished 1947-1999). Measures 10” tall x 3 ¼” wide x 4 ¼” at base. Probably from 1950s–‘60s. No flaws, damage or repairs. Droll and whimsical.
