Here is a stunning snow white Royal Doulton bone china cup and saucer set adorned in transfer art with pale purple glamis thistles and their prickly leaves and thorns; both pieces signed on face by Doulton designer Percy Curnock. Inside of cup has narrow border of green edged with gold enamel; small pedestal of cup also has border of gold enamel, and delicate pointed handle is gold enamel trimmed. Back of cup and inside of cup also show single purple thistle blooms. Saucer is richly adorned with a large spray on one side and a single bloom on the other; bears green border edged with gold enamel.
Excellent condition with no flaws of any kind and no damage. Applied inscription on bottom of saucer reads. “Glamis thistle found near Glamis Castle home of Queen Elizabeth.” This, of course, refers to the mother of Queen Elizabeth, Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, Queen Consort of George VI, known as the Queen Mother.
Both pieces signed on underside with Royal Doulton lion and crown mark, Made in England and Bone China; mark used 1928-1959. Also marked on saucer with printed number 20 to right of crown; this, when added to 1927, gives the date of manufacture, 1947 (Kovels, p. 237). Also marked with pattern number H. 4601 and date of registration, R. 1938. Saucer measures 5 3/8” in diameter; cup is 2 ¾” tall x 4 5/16 from brim to handle end x 1 5/8” at base of small pedestal.
