We’re presenting this sweet little toothpick holder of light green custard glass, marked Souvenir Marengo, Illinois. Piece was made by the Tarentum Glass Company of Pennsylvania at the very end of the 19th century. Pattern name is Harvard, but it is often called Columbia. The rim is saw tooth and embellished with gold enamel. There’s a ruffle around the middle of the holder, lined with glass beading. The garlic bulb shaped lower half has a waffle pattern of raised nubs.

Piece is unmarked, measuring, 2 ¼” tall x 2” in diameter at rim. Souvenir Marengo, Ill. is cold painted in red. There is a chip to one nub in the waffle pattern (photo 3), and a small dark mark next to it. There is a small chip to the underside of the base (photo 4). Very little paint loss to the gold enamel saw tooth rim and almost none to the red cold paint. We don't know if it's fluorescent glass, as we have not black light tested it.

Until recently, Marengo, IL was a small farming town out in the middle of wheat fields. Now, of course, it is considered a suburb of Chicago and sits beside the Interstate. The little toothpick holder bearing its name has become a souvenir of a lost time. We hope you will enjoy it.
