This lovely piece of California Pottery is a burgundy-colored candlestick by Roselane of Pasadena. It's shaped like a shallow bowl, mounted on a black pottery base with five legs cut to resemble a Chinese garden lantern. Five incised areas correspond to the five legs; the burgundy of the bowl makes a striking contrast to the black of the base, and a lighted candle will throw light through the incised designs.
This rich piece is signed Roselane on the base in script over USA in block letters. A gold foil sticker inside the bowl is embossed Roselane and Pasadena, California. Made in 1940s during a revival of Asian influence, the bowl measures 6 ½" wide x 3 ¼" tall. In new condition, but has a tiny, shallow surface mark over the glaze which we could not get to show in a photo. A listed California Potter, Roselane operated from 1938-1977.
Socket takes standard size candle, but a votive or a tea candle could be used as well. A beautiful example of American retro chic.
