Here is a beautiful, long china celery dish decorated with an inviting nature scene and signed by the talented artist. Lovely and serene, it features a hand painted pond lined with birch trees, with the scene narrowing toward a faraway mountain range. The colors in the water and sky show a pinkish sunset or sunrise. The trees are in autumn colors. This peaceful and inviting scene is set off by a cream-colored border edged with gold.
The dish is 14" long x 4" wide, tapering to open gold handles at each end, a classic art deco-era shape. The mark is a slightly smudged green stamp on the unglazed bottom: a star over RS inside a wreath, over Germany, in green. We don't know who the maker is, but the plate is nicely formed. The importance and charm of this piece is the artistry of the painting. It was most certainly decorated as a blank by the talented artist.
Signed by the artist, "MBH 1925" on the back. The underside rim of the dish is glazed all around in a pale lilac luster, echoing the pastel colors in the scene. The unglazed bottom has some smudges in spots; otherwise this remarkable example of the art of porcelain painting is in perfect condition. (Our pictures don't do it justice).
