This wonderful little metal vintage trinket or dresser box, made for men's jewelry, has the look of bronze. The lid, in bas relief, depicts a scene probably taken from a 17th century Flemish painting or etching. We think it's after Adriaen van Ostrade, but are not sure. The rich little work depicts four peasant drinkers and a barmaid sitting outdoors at a table, holding their mugs and a wine jug as they listen to a caped fiddler in a three-cornered hat. He stands with his back to the viewer, playing his instrument as a droopy dog walks by. A lovely big tree and the corner of a house, probably the tavern, complete the scene. The box is metal, deeply stamped in high relief with the reproduction, and plated a deep gold color. The interior of the box is lined with green silk. It measures 4.5" in diameter x 1.5" tall. The side of the lid is stamped H. J. Brohce.
The lid is almost perfect in condition, and surely as attractive as when it was new. The silk lining is faded and worn and there is some wear to the plating of the lower outside wall of the box as well as a bit of scuffing to the bottom.
