This gorgeous Art deco evening bag from the late 1920s is the epitome of flapper fashion. The brightly enameled "Elsah" armor mesh purse from the Whiting & Davis company was the favorite accessory for the eras "it" girls - including actresses, flappers, and socialites. The bold colors, fine links, and 8 point Van Dyke fringe give the purse a wonderful sense of movement as you walk and dance. The decorative frame is stamped with lovely flowers giving the piece a feminine touch. A fabulous, antique bag for a night out on the town!
Opening in 1876, the Whiting & Davis touts themselves and as "the oldest handbag company in the US." Still open today, they are renowned for luxury mesh handbags crafted in Massachusetts. The silk-screening technique to apply the enamels were painted by hand, one color at a time, allowing a day to dry between colors.
The evening bag is in very good to good antique condition with minor signs of wear. The surface of the enamel has light wear, one tiny area of missing paint, but nothing noticeable or visible. The ball kiss clasp is fully functioning and secures firmly. There are no links loss, or gaps, or damage to the fringe. The brass a few light areas of tarnish in the recessed areas, which adds to its antique appeal.
The purse measures 11-1/2" long with chain, 6" inch without chain, 3-5/8" wide, and weighs 0.29 pounds.
