This old handbag would be a great accompaniment to that little black dress or snazzy blue jeans. The purse is made of a silver mesh of tiny tile-like pieces. They are silver in color and possibly silver plated brass since they take on a nice shine but tarnish and are non-magnetic. The silver colored metal frame has a closure that is often referred to as a kiss clasp and it has a fine mesh wrist strap handle. It has a fabric lining with an little open compartment. I find no label or marking but it is typical of pieces made by the Whiting & Davis Co. or possibly from a Western Germany firm. I believe this purse is from the 1930’s.
It measures about 5 5/8” from the top edge of the frame, excluding the clasp to the bottom edge. The overall length is about 10 ¾”. It measures about 5 ¾” across at the bottom edge. It is in nice condition with some wear. The clasp works snuggly. The metal still shines but there are areas of discoloration and what looks like loss of plating. I have not tried a silver cleaner on it. There are a few missing links or scale which I have pointed out in the photos. The wrist strap has some creases and kinks and a small “tear” where it attaches. The lining has come unstitched on one side and it is soiled. The condition has been taken into consideration in the pricing.
