This is an old celluloid wind up toy from Japan. A brightly colored boy made of celluloid is suspended in the collapsible A-frame. His arms and legs are jointed and the small bar above his head has a weight attached at either end. When wound by the attached key the acrobat swings back and forth flipping around. The removable loop at the top changes the action. Raising or lowering it adjusts the speed at which the acrobat swings. Both the celluloid and one of the metal pieces of the frame is marked; Japan. I believe this is from the 1930's.
The boy measures about 5 ½” head to toe and the celluloid is in very good condition with minimal wear and good color. There are no splits, cracks but there does appear to be a small dent on the back of his head. There is a staple on his forehead but that, I believe, attaches to a weight inside to act as a counter balance. The metal trapeze measures about 12” to the top of the bar with the additional piece making it as much as 17” tall. There is minor discoloration to the metal. It's a fun vintage toy in good working condition.
It comes with the original box that has fun graphic and the attached paper label. It shows the acrobat in action with another young child and a clown looking on. It has the CK triangle trademark and show there were patents applied for in the U.S.A. and Canada. The box measures about 7” by 13” by 1 3/8” and it is in nice condition with light wear to the paper and cardboard.
