This is a wonderful bit of sports memorabilia featuring Tony Catalano aka The Italian Terror in the field of wrestling. These are two original glass negatives with Mr. Catalano in two poses, a boxing stance and one with him showing off his muscles. The detail is quite interesting, you can even see the veins in his legs. The images of the two glass negatives are great in their own right but included with them is a 1948 clipping from the Statesman newspaper of Boise, Idaho which gives a history of the wrestler and relays some interesting tales including a short-lived boxing match he had against Jack Dempsey. The article has an early photo of Catalano, probably about the same time period as the negatives and one from the time of the article with him at the café-bar-pool hall that he owned in Boise. This man had quite a history as told in the lengthy article. In the early photo that is in the article Mr. Catalano has a moustache but in the glass negatives he appears to be clean shaven. I believe the glass plates are probably from the 1930’s. They have been protected in an old Ilford Hyper-Chromatic Films box.

The glass plates measure just about 6 3/8” by 8 ½” with the photographic image being just slightly smaller. They are in good condition with minor edge nicks, faint fingerprints and minimal scratch wear or deterioration. The cardboard box measures about 7” by 9 1/16” and is in fair condition with edge and corner wear, soiling and a taped edge but it has provided protection and probably isn’t an integral part of the collection in my opinion. The newspaper article has been cut from the original page. It measures about 6” at the widest by almost 20” at the longest part. It is yellowed from age and creased where it has been folded to keep with the plates. Someone has x’d out an unrelated article and has also added the word “Smoke House” which may have been a nickname for Catalano.

Priced and sold as the group.
