This is the art work that was used for an old dinner menu from the S.S. Lurline Matson Lines. The art was done by E.Savage and is apparently titled A God Appears. It is a colorful representation of the reception of Captain James Cook to the Sandwich Islands. It is very colorful with the Hawaiian king and islanders lavishing gifts upon the god that had landed on their shore. This was one of many stock images that was used in an alternating fashion to print the daily menu. This design was used on February 5th 1949 and undoubtedly other dates but this particular sheet was never printed with a menu so it has never been folded. Apparently the designs were so popular that you could order them and the cruise ship would have them shipped to your home to await your arrival. On the back is information about the cover painting.
It measures about 13 ¾” by 21” and is in nice condition with minimal edge and corner wear and age discoloration.
The pictures are not shown at actual size. Please refer to the description for actual measurements.
