This old menu has a very fine front cover with a copy of Charles M. Russell’s Sioux Buffalo Hunter. The restaurant, The Horizon was touted as being Montana’s Finest Airport Dining Room, Café, Lounge and Bar. It was located at the at the International Airport, Gore Hill, Great Falls Montana. “Genuine Reproductions” of the Russell pen and ink sketch were available in the Café Lounge and the back flap of the tri-section menu has a description of the Buffalo Hunter with a sketch of a buffalo. The inside of the menu makes for fun reading with a diverse selection at very reasonable prices. There are no breakfast meals but there is a lot of everything else. On the high end you have a T-Bone steak with mushrooms which comes with a seafood cocktail, chilled juice, fruit cup, choice of potato, salad, vegetable, hot rolls w-butter, coffee or tea….and French fried onions all for $3.85! Top it off with a banana split for 45c. There’s a bar menu on the back with beer for 30c, wine 40c, martini 75c and call drinks topping out at 85c. The back flaps have advertising for the Russell Studio and Gallery, Eddy’s Bread and Severson Air Inc. I believe this extraordinary menu is from the late 1940’s or early 1950’s.
It measures about 7” wide by 12 3/8” high when closed and 15 1/8” wide when completely opened. It is in good condition with minimal wear. My assumption is this was preserved as a souvenir because of the beautiful image of the American Indian drawn by Russell.
