This old baseball glove is a Wilbur Wood Autograph Model in very nice condition. Wilbur Wood was a MLB pitcher who had a 17 year career. He was apparently a knuckleball specialist who threw left-handed and batted right-handed. He started his career with the Boston Red Sox in 1961. He played for the Pittsburgh Pirates from ’64-’65 but is best known for his time playing for the Chicago White Sox which was from 1967 – 1978. I assume this mitt is from this 1960’s – 1970’s period.
There are several things written on the palm of the glove; Wilbur Wood Autograph Model – Pre-Formed Pocket – Action Hinge – Rawhide Lacing – Registered 60-21208. On the back it reads; Pro Style Finger Design – Speedback – Professional Model. There is a stitched rectangle that apparently had a label which was removed at some time. It is possible from the research that I have done that this was made for Montgomery Ward but I don’t have concrete evidence. Two similar mitts that I have seen with the same Register number but different autograph names had a sewn on label that reads; Exclusively at Montgomery Ward – Made in Japan.
I don’t know how one is supposed to size or measure a mitt but it measures about 11” from the wrist, down through the pocket and to the end of the index finger and it measures about 11” across the inside of the pocket. It appears to be in good vintage condition. The leather is a little dry but still quite supple. I can’t say if all of the lacing is original and/or correct but it looks good.
