This striking old celluloid piece is a luggage identification tag. There are actually two pieces of celluloid held together at the bottom with a metal grommet. At the top the two pieces are held together with a leather strap that would attach to your luggage. One side has a colorful scene of a steam ship and reads; United States Lines - America- Europe. The back side has the U.S.L. flag logo and reads; Owners Name and Address inside. When the strap is removed the pieces slide open to reveal the “Property Of” information on one piece. The other side has; Our Fleet which was comprised of the S.S. Leviathan, S.S. George Washington, S.S. America, S.S. Republic, S.S. President Harding and S.S. President Roosevelt. The maker of this nice tag is not identified. The strap is supple and may be a replacement.
The celluloid measures about 2 7/16” by 1 3/8” and is in very good condition. There is a little discoloration on the celluloid under the strap tab which is probably from the strap dye. The strap and its white metal buckle are in very good condition.
The pictures are not shown at actual size. Please refer to the description for actual measurements.
