This is a very large old ice cream scoop manufactured by the Gem Spoon Co. of Troy New York. It is an early scoop patented in 1895 and "possibly the first round disher produced" according to Wayne Smith's book; Ice Cream Dippers. Inside the round size 6 bowl (six scoops to the quart) the wiper reads; Gem Spoon Co. Troy N.Y. Pat. May 7, 1895 - 6. It has a brass shaft and mechanism with a white brass bowl and a wood handle.
It measures about 11 ½” in length and the bowl measures about 3” in diameter. It is in good original condition with no damage but 100 plus years of use wear. The plating on the shaft and mechanism is partially worn so the brass shows through. The spring mechanism works properly. The handle has some scuff wear but looks quite good. Overall a very clean antique ice cream scoop in original condition.
