This interesting piece resembles the style of some of the pottery from the Pueblo area. It is subtly decorated in muted earth tones and it appears to be a thin glaze or slip. It is decorated with an assortment of bugs. There’s a spider, a red ant, several moth like bugs, a wasp and one that looks like a grasshopper and several beetles. Some of the design is cut into the clay almost like an etching process. Some of the design is painted with no more than a single line brush stroke and some has a heavier painted texture. It has a rounded bottom and a small neck with a slightly flared lip. The shape is sometimes called a jug or bowl but it may also be considered a cantaro, a percussion instrument. A cantaro is a clay pot that is struck with the hand to make a variety of sounds and the addition of water in the pot creates different effects. There is a signature inscribed on the bottom but it is obscured by the paper label which reads; Hecho en Mexico with an eagle’s head in the center of an oval. This piece is slightly crude in its artist presentation but still nicely executed. I believe it is from the 1950’s or 1960’s but I am not certain of the date. This could be hung from a leather or macrame sling.

It measures about 5 ½” tall and 7 ½” in diameter and is in nice condition with minimal wear and no damage.
