This old Q & E ice cream dipper was manufactured by the Erie Specialty Co. of Erie Pennsylvania around 1915. It appears to be made of nickeled brass and bronze with a wood handle. The size 12 (twelve scoops to the quart) is marked on the shaft just below the bowl. The Erie Specialty Company was prolific during the first part of 1900 and made many varied scoops. The patent for this scoop was applied for in 1911 by the inventor Edwin Walker and the patent was issued in 1915. The thumb plate is marked Erie Specialty Co. – Erie PA. and the disc on the opposing side reads; Quick and Easy.
It is in good condition with average usage wear. The wiper mechanism is a little tight but generally works well. There is some wear to the interior of the bowl but the outside of the bowl is smooth, polished and generally dent free. Most of the nickel is worn from the shaft so the bronze shows which is a nice contrast. There is some wear to the nickel on the thumb lever. The solder holding the handle to the bowl it thick but this is in the manufacturing and was common these scoops. The handle is in good condition with no splits. Overall a clean ice cream scoop in original condition. It measures about 11” in length and the bowl measures about 2 ½” in diameter.
