This old sterling spoon beautifully depicts mining during the late 1800’s or early 1900’s. The top of the handle shows a man at the top of a mine shaft, operating a cable wench into the mine below. The rope extends the length of the spoon shank and there is a bucket on the end of the rope, just above the workers. There is also a ladder that starts and the top and completes at the bottom section. The inside of the bowl has a detailed scene of two miners working the rock with picks. There are even two miner’s spikes with candles, extending from the rock, which are illuminating the mine. The entire front edge of the handle has a bead detail.
On the back of the handle is a crossed pick and shovel, a miner’s spike and a rope that forms the detail for the back edge of the handle and encircles the manufactures logo. Engraved on the top end is the word “Placerita”. I believe this is a reference to Placerita canyon, north of Los Angeles, where gold was found in the 1840’s.
There are also several identifying marks on the back of the handle. It reads; Sterling .925-1000 and “Copyrighted”. There is a “T enclosing a lion” trademark that I believe is for Towle Silversmiths of Massachusetts. It is also marked “Hight & Fairfield” which I believe is the Hight & Fairfield Jewelers of Butte Montana. Both of the latter markings would indicate that this spoon is from the late 1800’s or very early 1900’s.
It measures about 5 ¾” long and is in very good condition with minimal wear.
