This old watch chain would have been worn by a woman and it would have had a small watch or locket hanging from the swivel end. The chain is made up of thin links that appear to be soldered at every other link which would have made it very secure against breakage. There is a decorative slide which allows for this to be worn in several different fashions. The slide has a small horseshoe design which is set with alternating seed pearls and cabochon garnets (5 pearls, 4 garnets). The chain slides through a swivel with a spring clip to snap onto a watch. It is not marked anywhere so it is assumed to be gold filled or rolled gold. It does have a slight pink cast to it except for the swivel which is yellow. I believe this is from the late 1800’s – early 1900’s.
It measures about 14 ½” in length doubled (28" continuous) and the slide measures just over ¼” square. It is in nice but well used condition with some wear. Upon scrutiny or magnification you can see that some of the soldered joints show as silver so it appears they might have been plated and through use and the slide moving up and down the plating has worn off. The bottom holes of the slide also show wear and the back of the slide has dents that almost look as though it was used to teethe on. The spring on the swivel still works but the hook portions seems slightly bent so the pieces don’t line up which can be seen in the photos. It still seems to hold a watch or locket securely. The condition has been taken into consideration in the pricing.
