This beautiful old dresser box is a shaving set that holds a divided porcelain soap mug and a shaving brush.
The box is made of wood, clad with black celluloid. The top of the lid is decorated with a wonderful equestrian scene of a woman on horseback jumping a fence. Two dogs in the scene give the impression that this is a fox hunt. It is beautifully detailed with an abundance of foliage. The top corners have flowing art nouveau style flowers. Three sides of the bottom half of the box are also decorated with an embossed floral design. The back is basically plain. There is an ornate brass clasp on the front and small brass hinges on the back. The top and bottom of the inside are lined with a white silk fabric that is edged with a white and gold colored braid. There are depressions for both the handled shaving mug and brush. The bottom of the box is covered with a decorative paper with a few numbers stamped on it. It measures about 6 ½” wide by 6” deep. The lid is sloped so the highest point, the back, measures about 3 ½” high and it measures about 2 7/8” high at the front. It is in very nice condition with minor wear. The celluloid is in very nice condition with minimal wear or discoloration. There are some very tiny white flecks which might be paint overspray. The brass clasp was apparently silver gilded originally but only a trace of the silver remains in the recesses and the brass is patinaed and not polished. The fabric is fairly good with minimal soiling or fraying. The paper on the bottom shows minimal wear along the edges.
The shaving set consists of a porcelain mug that is divided at the top. One side is open to the bottom and the other side is like a basin with three holes in the bottom allowing drainage to the bottom. It is white porcelain with an embossed design around the outer edge and a decorative, applied handle. The entire outside area is painted with a matte black paint and the top edge is painted gold. The paint appears a bit crude but it seems to be baked on and it doesn’t flake or scratch off easily but there are two white spots at the top rim where the paint is gone. It measures about 3 ¾” in diameter excluding the handle and about 2 ½” high. Although crude in the ways previously mentioned it is in good condition with no chips or cracks.
The shaving brush has a painted wood handle and natural bristles. Attached to the handle is a pretty silver metal piece that looks like a fancy fleur-de-lis. The brush measures about 5 ¼” long and is in nice but used condition. The paint on the handle is good. The brush bristles appear lightly used and lean to one side rather than standing straight upward.
I believe this set is from the late 1800’s or very early 1900’s and overall it is in very nice condition.
