This old scale might have been used in an old hardware or general store possible for weighing grain or bales. It appears to be made of brass or bronze with cast iron u-hooks. I’s a solidly made scale weighing more than ten pounds. Both the top and bottom bar have increments from 0 to 500 with sliding weights. It is stamped Kimball Bros. Co. Council Bluffs, IA. The Kimball Brothers company apparently made a variety of scales in Council Bluffs beginning in the late 1800’s. The scale is also stamped with the number 1855 and the name Columbia which might be a model reference. The back side has a textured pattern and is stamped only with the number 2. I don’t know exactly how it was originally used so I can only assume that it is complete and is being sold as is. I had it hanging from the ceiling in my kitchen and then used some hooks over the bars to hang a few pots and cooking utensils from.
It measures about 29” in length and it measures about 3 ¾” from the top of the top bar to the bottom of the bar. It measures about 9 ½” from the top of the loop to the bottom of the bottom loop. The brass has patinaed and is mellow. It is a little shiny between the 0 and the 40 mark and both the top and bottom beam where the weights have been resting ever since I took it out of the kitchen which was years ago.
