This popular old tin toy is one version of the Mechanical Chompy Beetle made by the Louis Marx & Company. He was made in various color and pattern variations and has been called by many names including Moon Creature and Insect. The front of this one has red and black and graded red stripes. His back is blue with yellow circles on it and lines to indicate beetle wings. He has bulging plastic eyes with black discs inside that float about and on top of his head he has his original, rubber antennae. His mouth has red daggers that make it look like sharp fangs. His arms are pinned and swing loosely by his side as he moves about. When wound by the attached key the robot like critter moves forward opening and closing his hinged mouth, making a faint clicking sound like a beetle. On the lower left of the back he is marked with the Marx logo and the Louis Marx & Co. Inc. copyright. On the lower right it reads; Made in Japan. It does not have the copyright date but I believe this is from the mid to late 1960’s.

It measures about 5 ¾” to the top of the antennae and is in very nice, working condition with minimal wear. Its colors are bright with nice gloss and there is minor scratch or scuff wear.
This toy comes with its original box. The front of the box has a ferocious, half crazed image of the beetle in a field of flowers. The side panels have Chompy and another, similar toy that looks more like a bumble bee. It also has the phrase; One of the Many Marx Toys, Do You Have Them All?. The side and end panels describe the toy saying; Moves Forward with Chewing Action and Sound.
The box measures about 3 7/8” by 5 7/8” by 2 7/8” and is in visually nice condition with some edge and corner wear and light creasing and soiling. Some paper is torn on the top end panel where a price tag was once removed. The bottom of the box has a torn edge.
