Vintage Govancroft Crockery Jug - Heather Dew Whiskey with Paper Label
This old stoneware jug, made by Govancroft Pottery, once held Heather Dew Blended Scotch Whiskey which was blended and bottled by Mitchell Bros. Ltd of Glasgow, Scotland. The flagon has an elaborate, printed label on one side but what makes this especially nice is that the other side still has the original paper label glued to it. IT shows that this was imported by Foreign Vintages Inc. - 30 Rockefeller Plaza of New York. It also has part of a label that has elements of the flag of Scotland. This label could have been an export stamp. The shoulder where the handles are applied read; The Graybeard on one side and ; Federal Law Forbids Sale or Re-Use of this bottle. There is also a paper label across “Graybeard” that shows it contained 4/5 Quart. On the bottom it is stamped; Made in Scotland. The bottom is also incised with an oval that reads; Govancroft Pottery Glasgow. I believe this was from the late 1960’s or early 1970’s.
It measures about 6 5/8” high and 4 7/16” in diameter at the base. The stoneware is in very good condition with minimal wear and no noted damage. The labels are in nice condition but there are tears and missing pieces, especially on the smaller label. There is also some staining and soling but overall it displays quite nicely.
