This old metal display piece was probably used in an old hardware or general store. It would have held boxes of Cross brand tacks and nails. It is made so that even empty it appears to be full of colorful boxes marked Sterilized Tacks - Why Invite Infection which is actually lithographed onto the metal. There are eight rows and all of the "boxes" are the same with the side panels reading; Made By W.W.Cross & Co. Inc. - East Jeffery, N.H. U.S.A.. There are four top panels. Two opposing ones are the same and read; Cross - Clean, Sharp, Uniform Sterilized Tacks. The other opposing signs are different. One has Pictures of tacks in the varying lengths. The other side has pictures of varying sizes of Cobblers Nail, Clinch Nails, Hand Tacks, Rubber Heel Nails and Double Pointed Tacks. On the platform of the revolving rack it tells that it's the property of the Cross Company and that it's being "loaned" to help the Hardware Man. The base is made of cast iron but the rest is made of tin. It was made by the H.D. Beach Co. of Coshocton, Ohio. I believe this is from the early 1900's.

The overall height is about 19 1/8" and the bottom platform measures about 7 1/2" in diameter. It is in very nice original condition with good colors and gloss. There is minimal wear, paint loss and scratches. There is a slight amount of tiny pitting on the top panels, particularly the one that has the Standard Tack Lengths.

The pictures are not shown at actual size. Please refer to the description for actual measurements.
