This old handbag is a beautiful example of the wares produced by the Whiting & Davis company. The purse is made of a fine chain which is painted in a fun pattern in slightly muted fuchsia, blue, yellow and black. The chain fringe on the bottom has a zig-zag edge. The silver colored metal frame has a stamped design which included geometric shapes and floral panels. It has a closure that is often referred to as a kiss clasp and the chain handle is comprised of twisted links. The purse is not lined and there is no evidence that it ever was which apparently was common during the latter part of the 1920’s and into the 1930’s. Attached to the inside is a small metal tag that reads; Whiting & Davis Co. Mesh Bags Reg. U.S. & Can.. I believe this beautiful purse is from the 1920’s – 1930’s.
It measures about 6 5/8” from the top edge of the frame to the bottom of the frame or about 12 ¼” from the top of the chain to the bottom of the fringe. It measures about 4” across the frame. It is in very nice condition with minimal wear and the clasp works snuggly. There appear to be three of the mesh links missing which I have tried to point out in the photos.
