This old box would probably have been found sitting on the counter of a general store or soda fountain where candy and such was sold. The cardboard box has a paper hinge along the back edge so the lid stays with the box when it is opened. In the bottom portion of the box has a glass lid that has a paper hinge along the lower edge and the packages of gum were displayed in the box under the glass with the lid of the box open. The label on the outside of the box is the same as the label on the inside of the lid and it and the information on the bottom of the box, above and below the glass panel, makes for good reading. The gum was manufactured by Adams and Sons of Brooklyn & Chicago and there were 20 packages in the box. One line says there were "5 Tablets in Each Package" and another line reads "Five Pieces of Pepsin Tutti-Frutti to Every Bundle". The best line reads "Each tablet contains one grain of Armour's High Test Pepsin gum guaranteed to digest 2500 grains of meat" and therefore it was used for the relief of indigestion and dyspepsia. The box is not dated but I believe it is from the early 1900's.

The box measures about 4 1/2" by 8 1/2 by 1" and is in fair condition with obvious wear and damage. The lid is slightly faded and soiled and the edges and corners are worn. The back paper hinge is partially torn at both ends. Inside the paper label is in much nicer condition. There is a ribbon attached to the lid which should also be attached to the inside of the box but isn't any longer and there was a small ribbon tab at the top edge of the glass that was used to open the glass but that is worn to almost nothing. The paper advertising along the top and bottom edge of the glass is soiled and torn in a few places. The bottom of the box is soiled, has a pencil scribble and has a few tears. It is also stamped "Wintergreen".
