This sterling silver walnut was probably a chatelaine bauble and would have been handy since it was meant to hold a sewing thimble. The hinged nut appears to be fashioned after an English walnut and is rather realistic. It is hinged at the back where there is a loop and a jump ring. The bottom half of the pointed end has two small tabs to facilitate in hoping the shell. Inside, one half of the shell has a velvet-like fabric lining where a thimble would nestle. On the outside it is marked; F & B Sterling. I think this was made by either the Foster & Bailey or Theodore W. Foster & Bro. Company both of Providence, Rhode Island. I believe it is from the late 1800’s or early 1900’s.
It measures about 1 ¼” long, excluding the attached loop by about 1” at the thickest. It weighs approximately .47 dwt or .73 grams, total weight and is in very nice condition with minor wear and it clips together well. The fabric is fairly clean although it is slightly frayed.
The thimble is shown for demonstration only. THIMBLE NOT INCLUDED.
