This thick glass paperweight is advertising an engraving company but it’s picturing a very large hog by the name of Pathfinder. Along the bottom edge it reads; Waterloo Engraving & Service Co., Waterloo, Iowa – Fancy Stock Engravers for High Class Sales Catalogues and Circulars. It doesn’t appear that the photo of the pig has anything to do with the engraving business. Under the belly of the hog it reads; Royal Pathfinder owned by Hanks & Bishop – Monroe, Iowa. Royal Pathfinder was apparently a prize winning Duroc pig that sired many gilts and boars in his life which ended around 1920. The back of the paperweight is slightly concave and it appears to be covered with opaque paint covered with paper. I think it’s the manufacturer’s information that is stamped on the paper but it’s difficult to make out other than the fact of; St. Louis, Mo. U.S.A.. I believe this is probably from the early 1900’s prior to the demise of Royal Pathfinder.
It measures about 4 1/16” long by 2 9/16” by 7/8” thick and is in nice condition with minor wear. The top of the glass has faint scratch wear and there is only one small nick on the bottom edge of the left side as shown in the photos. The paper on the back is torn and worn but it doesn’t seem to be affecting the image on the front.
